Abstract | This volume provides a follow-up of a 1961 study which was undertaken to determine how well 74 colleges and universities were preparing prospective reading teachers. Questionnaires were mailed to 220 schools to determine the extent to which the 22 original, published recommendations had been implemented. Chapter one outlines data gathered from the 161 respondents' questionnaires, as well as from in-depth interviews conducted at 50 of the schools: a majority of the recommendations were reported to be in effect. Chapter two assesses changes in teacher preparatory programs: over four-fifths of the respondents indicated that changes in scope and content of reading programs and in related experiences did take place. Chapter three details recommendations for the future as determined by respondents: slightly less than one-half provided suggestions. Chapter four introduces two descriptions of teacher education programs at the undergraduate level: a carefully planned competency-based alternative for the single reading course offered by one school and a program, based on suggestions from several schools, which reflects a number of promising practices.
